Your NAUI Course Director
Frederick Claro

Recipient of NAUI Outstanding Services Award 2001
for NAUI Leadership Development.

In this world of multiplicity and confusion, it is very important for all of us to find satisfaction in our personal pursuits as well as in our training and education. We will all agree that quality time, quality education, quality counseling, and quality criticism were all what we had, or wish we had, during our youth. Those are the qualities we are looking for in a teacher, someone who is going to take part in our physical and intellectual development, and who will have a positive lifetime impact on our behavior.
There is no doubt that this is also what we all wanted as young dive leaders: somebody knowledgeable and experienced who we could rely on, someone who could help us fulfill our desire to be capable and confident dive leaders.

We at ScubaDivingInstructor.Com have been very fortunate to find one of these rare educators. Frederick "Freddy" Claro has a true love for diving and a dedication to his students and his job that is rare in this fast-paced world. Most of us here at ScubaDivingInstructor.Com have been trained by Freddy, and we wouldn't trade our training with him for anything. Freddy can be tough when necessary, but he is fair, and he has everything it takes to make you into the respected dive professional that you want to be. He's also a really nice guy! Let's look at his dive career.

Frederick (who is French but speaks fluent English) became a diver in August 1981 in Toscana, Italy and hasn't stop diving since then! After a university education in Lille (northern France), he worked in the French military and then the National Police Force from 1984 to 1989. Every holiday he went diving in some of the best diving places in the world: Italy, France, Madagascar, the Red Sea, Thailand, Malaysia...
His passion for the underwater world became stronger than a career as a police officer and he left for Australia in 1989 after becoming a Divemaster in Phuket, Thailand. In 1990, he became an Instructor and has been teaching as an instructor ever since in several locations; the Red Sea, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan. All this time spent diving, and teaching diving, has given him tremendous experience, allowing him to log well over 3000 dives, to certify 1300 students of all levels and ages (from 12 to 67 years old), among them 300 dive leaders and over 200 Instructors.

In 1996, after some differing of opinion with one of the major certification agencies worldwide, he crossed over to NAUI to join the most democratic diving certification agency. With NAUI  he finally experienced and still enjoys the academic freedom he was longing for.
Today, Frederick is one of the most respected diving leaders in Asia and the most active NAUI Course Director in the region. He has designed a very comprehensive and intensive Instructor Career Development Program, which takes divers up through the levels of NAUI to instructor. He has trained a team of educators (most of us here at ScubaDivingInstructor.Com) who assist him in his courses and programs. Some of us have been trained by Frederick from beginner level and have followed him and trained with him since 1992. Recently he taught his wife Jennifer,  who has been a Divemaster since 1996, up to Instructor and Instructor Trainer. They are a great team!

He is a frequent contributor to the NAUI magazines 'Sources' and 'ReSources' and has helped in research programs on Indo-Pacific cowry shell evolution (connected with the University of Berkeley, California and the marine biology laboratory of the University of Guam). He has guided professional underwater photographers and video-graphers on duty for magazines in the Red Sea and Thailand. He also assisted in the training of local "sea gypsy" fisherman in southern Thailand in a project financed by the European Union, designed to reorient local population towards the tourism industry and keep them away from their traditional fishing activities and further protect the environment.
Frederick has trained numerous dive leaders and instructors from all over the world (from Greenland to Australia and from France to Japan). Most recently, in spring 2000 he taught the first ever NAUI ITCs in Lebanon and Bulgaria. Most of his students are today successful dive professionals and some are dive center owners/managers worldwide (please see the Student Comments page for comments from some of them). He has been Training Manager of known and successful diving centers in Asia and is the founder of Consult Dive International, a worldwide dive business and education consulting agency, also a NAUI Platinum Pro Member and DivingTravel.Com, a successful online diving travel agency, which provides tours and live aboard trips in the Asia Pacific region, the Galapagos and the Red Sea.
Frederick is dedicated to training the best instructors in the field. Following his training will bring you the experience of Frederick's lifetime commitment to both the ocean and to his students. We at ScubaDivingInstructor.Com highly recommend Freddy's training to those who are serious about diving, and who are committed to being competent and confident dive professionals
