NAUI ITC, European Diving Career Institute

October 2002

By Frederick Claro, NAUI CD# 18819

The European Diving Career Institute in Varna, Bulgaria, was again the host of an ITC, which this time trained NAUI Instructors for the Balkan region.

Five candidates joined the program run at the Institute by NAUI Course Director Frederick Claro, IT Ivan Ivanov, director of the Institute and Victor Sfirlea from neighboring Romania, who brought a candidate with him. The course was the first run in the new classroom / learning complex of the Institute.

The ITC trained the first Bulgarian woman to become a NAUI Instructor: 20 year old Maria Mantscheva, a brilliant physics student at the University of Vienna, Austria, and a talented multilingual, who will be of great help in the future to teach the numerous German speaking tourists, enjoying great summer vacations in the ever expanding resort of Varna.

We also trained a veteran Bulgarian Navy and CMAS 2* Instructor, Mr. Rosen Gevshekov, who also is the secretary of the Bulgarian National Association of Diving Activities, a member of the CMAS, reinforcing the bonds in Bulgaria between both association working together for safe diving practices. Rosen is also the chairman of the Eco Diving and Underwater Archeology club: Relikt 2002. The association has a vessel fully equipped to dive the remote wrecks of the Black Sea.

The ITC also successfully trained Mr. Atanas Autonov, military and navy diver with excellent water skills, Mr. Petar Haralampiev, staff of Varna Diving Centre, and very experienced resort life guard with excellent water skills and English command. Petar will be a valuable member of the VDC team in the future.

Neighboring Romania, a quite recent emergence of NAUI in the Balkans, was represented by well trained and motivated 20 year old Emilian Constantin, who became the youngest recreational diving instructor in the history of his country. Emilian was well trained and prepared for the course by NAUI IT Victor Sfirlea, the leading quality NAUI trainer in Romania, who also was staff of the ITC together with Ivan Ivanov.

This was a great step forward in the training of Romanian diving professionals, as it is still very difficult to train efficiently there, and we are confident that this was a breakthrough quality training for our Romanian members well represented with Victor and Emilian.

Our next program will be run in August-September 2003 at the Institute, please e-mail us for further information.
